Excerpts from recent reviews...
THE PLAYHOUSE, WESTON SUPER MARE
Despite having seen the rock ‘n’ roll spectacular ROCKIN’ ON HEAVEN’S DOOR on many occasions, I never cease to be amazed at its constant innovative ideas and improvements, made to an already superb package. Last week, at The Playhouse Theatre, Weston Super Mare, they pulled an early, but great big, Easter Bunny of a surprise out of the hat when from the wings stepped The Big Bopper, showcased brilliantly by Simon Rawlings, who has starred in this role in the West End version of Buddy.
By now we were all in party mode as Eddie Cochran (Rebel Dean) strutted his stuff. He continues to improve and refine the role and his guitar playing tonight was from the top drawer. Somethin’ Else highlighted this set for me, before Three Steps To Heaven brought on The Big O. Yes, Roy Orbison was right there with Only The Lonely, wasn’t he? Johnny Curtiss always seems more like Orbison than the man himself and he delighted me with Pretty Woman and It’s Over before Running Scared took us to the break. Debutant drummer Spencer slotted perfectly into these powerful anthems. We felt we’d already had our money’s worth. Tonight he gave us an exciting preview of what will come as he rocked the early classics of Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock and Heartbreak Hotel with showstoppers You Were Always On My Mind, Suspicious Minds and an awesome I Just Can’t Help Believing, accompanied by Roy Orbison. You Gave Me A Mountain was included too. Great.
La Bamba performed by Bopper kept the party swinging, before Rebel returned as the clapping and stomping escalated to C’mon Everybody and Summertime Blues. What a night. However, as always, even when you think it’s impossible, the best was saved to last. All the stars joined the King on the Wonder of You, before the mega blast of American Trilogy – worth the admission on its own – and a rousing Johnny B. Good.
Ten years on, the show‘s popularity has reached new heights. We now have guest artist Simon Rawlings (The Big Bopper from the West End‘s Buddy Show), making special appearances from time to time. Simon has a great rapport with the audience, the warmth and humour of his performance wins them over immediately, with his leopard skin jacket, gold phone and inimitable
‘Hello Babyeeeeeeee‘… you can‘t help but love him.
