The Acoustic Sessions: Jackie Oates

Saturday March 27th
Queen's Hall, Narberth.

The Acoustic Sessions, Span Arts' monthly night of acoustic music, is back again with one of the most acclaimed performers in British folk and acoustic music.

Jackie Oates is a singer and fiddle player hailing from Staffordshire. Her unique treatment of English ballads and songs, and pure, haunting singing style has attracted increasing attention, and she is fast becoming one of the most original, interesting and innovative performers on the folk and acoustic music scene. She was a founder member of Northumbrian group and Mercury nominated Rachel Unthank and the Winterset until early 2007, and has since guested with Van Eyken, the Reg Meuross Band and Show of Hands. Since appearing as a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2003, she has performed extensively across the country, steadily winning herself devoted fans and gathering in increasing numbers of awards - two BBC Folk Awards 2009, the Horizon Award For Best New Comer and Best Traditional Track Award, as well as reaching the top 10 in the Mojo Album Of The Year 2008.
Now, with increasing attention from the musical mainstream including airplay and support from Radio 2's Steve Lamacq, she seems poised to perform that rarest of feats, a crossover success from folk to a more universal appeal...

Jackie will be appearing with a full live band. You can listen to music from her new album on her website or on her Myspace page.

Supporting Jackie will be the superb Mike Chant. A Pembrokeshire-based multi-instrumentalist, he's perhaps best known for his work with the wonderful band Nagus but as a solo performer he is absolutely in his element - heartfelt, original, inspired and passionate. Listen to his music on his website.

"Her ebullient cover of Sugarcubes' 'Birthday' and the rush of electronica on the desolate 'Past Caring' are pure genius on a richly rewarding album." Independent On Saturday (album of the week)
"Marking the full graduation of Jackie Oates as a front-line talent." - fRoots
"Jackie Oates is deservedly becoming yet another young celebrity in the new folk scene." - The Guardian
