On Thursday 25 May, Khamira will be performing at Hotel Plas Hyfryd, as part of their DEBUT UK/Wales tour. This will be an incredible evening of World Music, as this exciting new band showcase their beautiful fusion of Welsh folk, Indian music and Jazz.

Burum, the Welsh Folk/Jazz group have joined forces with 3 great Indian musicians: Aditya Balani on guitar,  Suhail Yusuf Khan on Serengi, and Vishal Nagar on Tabla to create Khamira; in November 2015 Burum travelled to India to tour, but also to start a new project – called Khamira.
(Khamira, is ‘Burum’ in Hindi, which means ‘yeast’).

The Welsh band members of Khamira, Tomos Williams (trumpet), Dave Jones (piano), Aidan Thorne (bass) and Mark O’Connor (drums) are all well known and in demand musicians. All three of the Indian musicians, Aditaya Balani (guitar), Suhail Yusuf Khan (sarangi & vocals) and Vishal Nagar (tabla & vocals) are widely respected. You can find out more about the members of Khamira by visiting their website here!

Khamira were chosen to receive funding from the India Wales Fund, a joint scheme between the British Council and Wales Arts International which aims to help build relationships between Wales and India and is a part of the UK/India 2017 cultural season.

Khamira will be performing in Wales as the first leg of the project, before returning to India in January 2018, working in collaboration with the music agency Gatecrash to organise workshops and concerts across India.

Their sound is truly unique and must be heard in person to really appreciate this culmination of culture and music, but below are a few examples of what you can expect when they perform at Hotel Plas Hyfryd on the 25th:

Khamira were chosen to receive funding from the India Wales Fund, a joint scheme between the British Council and Wales Arts International which aims to help build relationships between Wales and India and is a part of the UK/India 2017 cultural season.

Rebecca Gould, Head of Arts at British Council Wales says: “Khamira’s tour of Wales and India, which is part of the UK/India Year of Culture, will deepen existing cross-country relationships already developed by the brand, reach new audiences both at home and in India, and open up future opportunities for cultural collaboration.

Nicola Morgan, Head of Wales Arts International adds: “Khamira is based on mutual respect, curiosity and friendship, values at the very heart of our India Wales programme with British Council. We have been proud to support the collaboration from its inception in 2014 to the recording of an album in 2016, and are delighted that the band can perform for Welsh audiences for the first time, thanks to the India Wales Fund. The partnership between Gatecrash and Khamira will be crucial in enabling the band to tour India and is a perfect example of the kind of
long-term relationships we hope to see developing between Wales and India.”

It is guaranteed to be an incredible evening of rich culture and unforgettable music, with some top talents on the stage at Hotel Plas Hyfryd; we hope to see you there!
