Our most foot stomping and theatrical Xmas Bonanza yet!
This Saturday 16th December The Carny Villains will be gracing the stage at the Queens Hall, Narberth. The six-piece circus show band play stomping swing and ska all rolled out live and kicking with the riotous energy of punk rock. Live, they are a full sensory theatrical experience, with clowning and antics that keep crowds laughing and dancing, until the end where the entire place will be jumping.
Since forming in 2009 The Carny Villains have performed high profile sets at many major UK festivals including Glastonbury, Boomtown, Bestival and Shangri-La Hell stage. The Villains are no stranger to overseas touring with tours taking them to the likes of Germany, Italy, France and Austria. Regular appearances at street festivals around the world have allowed the group to perfect their infectious showmanship skills and their ability to work a crowd.
Ahead of the gig I got in touch with Zac Gregory the double bassist of the Carnys and asked him a few questions:
How were the Carny Villains formed?
We started as a Showband for the Invisible Circus. Making live music scores for Cabarets and large scale Circus and sideshow events in an old Police and Fire station in Bristol. We were never supposed to be a real band but people kept asking us to do gigs so we kept accepting.
How would you personally describe your music to someone who has not seen you before?
A mixture or Swing and Ska with a dash of surf rock and Balkan Folk.
Can you tell us about your most memorable gig?
Most recently it was playing to 10,000 people in an abandoned steel works at a festival in Ostrava, Czech Republic
If you had the choice to support a band, who would it be and why?
That is a tough one…… The clash? Gogol Bordello? Elvis? No definitely ACDC. Playing a show with Faela! Would be fun.
If given the choice to play at a particular venue or festival, where would it be and why?
We would like to make it to Fuji Rocks and Australia. Also getting to New Orleans would be ace.
But that is not all! DJ Sacha Dieu will be supporting the Carny Villains, he one of the pioneers and specialists of Balkan Gypsy, Electro swing and global beats. As co-founder and resident DJ of the legendary Gypsy Burlesque monthly “Stranger than Paradise”, Sacha’s mix “(S)winging it” is in the Top 3 most played Electro Swing mixes on Soundcloud, with over 680k plays to date.
