Civic Week Childrens Workshops 2005

In a new partnership this year, Span Arts contribution to Narberth Civic Week was fronted by a group of local artists and performers called Common Ground in a large marquee on the Town Moor.

This group came together via Circus Malarkey who have had a colourful presence at the last few celebrations. All the workshops arranged by Common Ground were oversubscribed and many children who had not booked in advance were disappointed that they could not be included.

However for three afternoons the crew were able to give tuition in circus skills for all who were turned up.

The morning workshops in kite making, charcoal drawing and clay modelling were enjoyed by all the children who took part. After a tremendous overnight storm, the tent which had been on hire from a community group in Hermon, was found to be on the ground on Thursday morning, It’s fate had been hastened by teenage revellers who had thought it fun to remove the side poles the previous evening.

The lack of a tent did not affect Thursday's programme as The Rev. Peter Lewis came to the rescue and opened the Church Hall so that circus skills could take place while the Belly Dancing class was held in the Span building. On Thursday evening Biddy Wells held a singers workshop in the Queens Hall gallery which was well attended and appreciated by everyone there.

On Friday Narberth Quilters in the form of the Mayoress and her friend, Janet, taught the basics of the quilters' art to children at Span to conclude the art workshop programme.

Once again Narberth Civic Week provided a ‘have a go’ opportunity for many kids to try something new and from the feedback that Span has received it was enjoyed by all who came along both visitors and locals.

The workshops, all free, were made possible by a grant from the European Union Social Risk Fund.

Span Arts would like to thank Common Ground:- Clea Sharpe, Donna, Ben Clegg, and Malcolm Prout for their marvellous voluntary efforts and all the other workshop leaders who were so good at their job. Special thanks to Saul Baum who co-ordinated the whole thing for Span Arts.
