Starting the season with a Christmas cracker!

There’s nothing like the rich sounds of smoky saxophone harmonies, warm-toned bass guitars and the twinkling of chimes to send you swaying into the festive season. On Thursday 30th November The Queens Hall will be graced with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama’s Big Band.

The show is a rare chance to hear the entirety of Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite, a thrilling mixing pot of Tchaikovsky and Ellington. The second set will explore more of Ellington’s library as well as the music of Ella Fitzgerald.
The band’s director, Ted Smith, first started the band 7 years ago while studying at RWCMD. Since then the band has performed with Steve Waterman and Gordon Campbell and was lucky enough to perform for Dame Shirley Bassey last year at a gala concert celebrating her music.

Players in the band are all students at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Ages range from 18 to 25 with an international collective – with singers Alina Miroshnichenko hailing from Russia and Ines Matias from Portugal.  Bassist Matheus Prado Mota is from Brazil via Spain and altoist Norman Willmore from Shetland.

The band is mimicking Duke Ellington’s layout and features 16 instrumentalists including saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm section.

Expect to hear familiar melodies played in an unfamiliar, festive feel-good way and to make it extra Christmassy, mulled wine and spiced cider will be available to sip at your leisure as well as mince pies to nibble whilst you watch.

It’s the ideal evening for an alternative pre-Christmas works party, perfect to get a fantastic Jazz fix and an inspirational event for any budding musician young and old alike!

The event will be held on Thursday 30th November at The Queen’s Hall, Narberth. Doors open at 7:30.
